ENOUGH OF THIS STINK

People in Heywood and neighbouring areas are suffering the devastating effects of poor planning and licensing enforcement at the Pilsworth South Landfill Site.

In December, Bury Council's Labour bosses pushed through planning permission to allow Valencia to expand further into the green-belt, at a time when it was clear that Valencia were already in breach of planning permission and licensing regulations.

Liberal Democrat candidate for West Heywood, Tom Shaw stated "This awful situation that our community is living with has come about because of the failure of local Labour politicians to properly scrutinise and challenge:

  • The orignal planning proposal.
  • The Valencia takeover of the site.
  • The Environmental Permit.

Nor have they enforced the planning permission. Trash mountain is much higher than the permission allows.

Local people are reporting an increase in nausea, and other conditions that suggest that in addition to the smell of the mercatans (the gas being given off at the site) they are other noxious fumes being given off.

Tom Shaw stated that "We need proper investigation on health grounds as much as anything else." and went on to say "However, with an untested risk to health we need this site closed to any new trash, and properly capped."

Tom Shaw added "Temporary suspension of an overfilled site that has breached its license is just not good enough. We need the site closed to business, permanently."
