WATER MESS!

17 Feb 2026

Despite some noticeable improvement, Rabina Asghar and the Liberal Democrats continue to be concerned about the levels of sewage pollution in the river Spodden.

Rabina Asghar told Focus that “There has been a reduction in sewage pollution in our rivers since 2023, but the figures are still showing a massive discharge of excrement into the river.

"Children playing near the river, and pets and other wildlife swimming in the river, are facing the possibility of some very unpleasant illness as a result of the failure of Unitied Utilities to get this under control. This is not a lack of spending now, but a chronic underinvestment over several years, and we need the money raised from water bills to be spent on sorting out the mess, rather than lining investor’s pockets.

"The figures for 2025 are due out in the Spring, and we are hoping that there will be an improvement, but we will be monitoring what happens and calling people out if we don’t see a significant change.”
