Focus on keeping our area clean

19 Feb 2026

Tom Shaw and the Liberal Democrats are working hard all year round to keep West Heywood clean and tidy.

Tom told Focus that "Climate change, air pollution, and the state of our rivers are all important issues on which the Liberal Democrats are campaigning  nationally and locally. However, something we can all do to protect our environment is keep help keep our area clean. Some of the litter blowing around our streets is endangering and even poisoning our wildlife and our food.

That's why we have run litter picks, and why we are calling on Rochdale's Labour council to get its act together when it comes to tackling litter and fly-tipping.

Big Skip Day

It's time to tackle fly-tipping!

Fly Tipping is ugly and is destroying our open spaces, it is also dangerous for the wildlife that may root through it and either eat the plastics and other toxins or be trapped and die amongst it. These are the reasons why Tom Shaw, like many local residents, has been reporting fly tipping to the Council and asking for it to be removed.

The Liberal Democrats are calling on Heywood Township to take immediate action to tackle fly-tipping by introducing a Big Skip Day twice a year when the Township will provide street for people to get rid of unwanted household waste. This would cost less than removing flytipping.

Liberal Democrat campaigner, Tom Shaw, stated that “The closure of the Heywood Tip was a big mistake, however we cannot reverse that decision and it is high time that the Council took action to put right some of the mess that they have created. That is why we are calling on Heywood Township to start organising a big-skip day twice a year to give people the chance to get rid of their bulky rubbish and keep Heywood clean.”

Reporting fly-tipping and litter in our area!

Tom Shaw was constantly reporting litter and fly-tipping on High Street and so he had a meeting with RBH who are now working to keep the area clean. Tom told FOCUS “The difference in this area is massive, and by keeping our area clean we also protect ourselves from vandalism and anti-social behaviour.”

Tom has a long list of fly-tipping and littering he has reported, and also gets involved in community litter picking and other local activities.

Please help Tom and the local Liberal Democrats by completing our environment survey below.
