A digital reminder

I am writing this letter to remind Rochdale residents that later this year the Granada region will be going digital. On November 4th the traditional BBC2 transmission will be turned off and the other terrestrial channels (BBC1, ITV1 and Channels Four and Five) will be switched off on December 2nd. After this time you will need digital equipment to be able to watch television.
It must be remembered of course that you may already by digitally ready and therefore not need any additional upgrades or equipment. So please, don't be conned into paying for something you don't need.
If you are unsure or have any questions regarding the switchover there is support available through the process. There is lots of useful information and guidance for everyone at the national website www.digitaluk.co.uk or you can call the UK helpline on 08456 50 50 50.
As Rochdale's Cabinet Member for Older People, I am aware that in the Granada region more than 1.2million people are eligible for more advice through the Help Scheme. These include those aged over 75 or over, those who receive Disability Living Allowance, Attendance Allowance, Constant Attendance Allowance or Mobility Supplement Allowance; or those who have lived in a care home for six months or more; or those who are registered blind or disabled.
Most people will have to pay a £40 charge towards the cost of this service, although it is free to those in receipt of certain benefits. The Help Scheme has specially trained customer service advisers who will answer calls and their uniformed installers have all had Criminal Records Bureau checks and carry special identity cards.
If you have any queries visit their website at www.helpscheme.co.uk or call the helpline on 0800 40 85 900. Alternatively, I have spoken to Age Concern in Rochdale and they have a dedicated team who are happy to help. You can call them on 01706 712515.
