Tom Shaw

for Heywood and Middleton North

Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate Tom Shaw has today launched his campaign in Heywood and Middleton North, promising to hold this disastrous Conservative government to account for their failings on the NHS, the cost-of-living crisis, and water companies polluting the rivers with filthy sewage.

Tom Shaw will look to build on the positive momentum that the Liberal Democrats have built in Greater Manchester, after winning more seats than the Conservatives across the area in the local elections in May. The constituency covers the communities of Heywood, Castleton, Bamford, Norden and parts of Middleton and Rochdale.

Tom Shaw told Focus that “The Conservatives are a spent force around here, their MP is rarely seen in the constituency and only the Liberal Democrats can seriously challenge Labour’s complacency. In Rochdale town hall we see daily how slow Labour are to respond to the issues affecting our communities, be it the sewage in our rivers, the cost-of-living crisis, the conflict in Gaza or protecting our natural environment it is the Liberal Democrats who are taking the lead.”

Labour’s tardiness in addressing the conflict in Gaza shows how little they can be trusted in an emergency. The Liberal Democrats have been calling since last October for an immediate bi-lateral ceasefire in Gaza so we can get the hostages out, the aid in, and begin to negotiate a two-state solution to the conflict. Locally the Labour party forced through the disastrous cycle lanes in Castleton, and are now promoting unpopular busgate plans that will do the same damage to Heywood.

Tom Shaw works in a call centre, lives in Heywood, and was the Liberal Democrat candidate in West Heywood in May, where he closed the gap with Labour by 14%.
