Eventually the pressure paid off and the Labour Council agreed to continue funding repairs/maintenance work. The agreement was only temporary and needs to be renegotiated for 2026. Due to there being no local elections in 2025, this May could well be the last chance for local people to have a say in who gets to make the final decision.
Three years ago, when this case was being debated at the Council Cabinet about whether to keep it under Council control, the sitting Labour councillors said the council should relinquishing responsibility for the car park, saying there was no benefit to the Council.
Rabina Asghar supports the Council retaining control of the Car Park, saying that “I will continue to support local business on this matter and ensure that we do everything we can to make sure that this vital resource is retained for residents, business owners, churchgoers, GP patients and members of local community groups. The Council is here to serve the people of Rochdale, and we need to ensure that it’s priorities are those of the community it serves.”
