Local football fever hits Parliament!

The Second Division Play-Off Final between Rochdale AFC and Stockport County is a huge talking point amongst MPs. The rivalry though has not stopped three MPs joining forces and praising the achievements of both clubs. Paul Rowen (Rochdale), Mark Hunter (Cheadle) and Andrew Stunell (Hazel Grove) have put in an Early Day Motion into Parliament.

"…salutes the achievement of both Stockport County and Rochdale FC in qualifying for the League Two play-off final at Wembley; recognises the tremendous turnaround in fortunes since the arrival of the teams' respective managers, Jim Gannon and Keith Hill; congratulates the players and fans of both teams for their sporting behaviour throughout the season; believes these clubs embody all that is best about English football; and wishes both clubs well at Wembley."

This goodwill though hasn't stopped the banter in Parliament. Rochdale MP, Paul Rowen is predicting a 3-1 victory for Rochdale on their first ever visit to the hallowed turf at Wembley.

Mr Rowen said: "Whilst recognising the great work of both these clubs, I think Rochdale will pip Stockport to promotion. Under our manager, Keith Hill, the lads have proved that they have the character to win.

"Our town has gone football crazy this week and the fact that we have a local derby too makes it special.

"I work with my colleagues, Andrew and Mark all the time on various issues affecting Greater Manchester. This will all be put to one side though for our big match next week.

"Both teams have struggled in recent seasons, but the change of manager and attitude at both clubs has made a real difference."

Mark Hunter said: "This tie is a real acknowledgment of the way our teams have turned things round this season.

"The bet is just a bit of fun but I won't deny that there's been a bit of needle this week between us.

"I will of course be backing Stockport and I am sure they will take their league form onto the pitch at Wembley. I'm looking forward to Stockport beating Rochdale.

"There's a definite split in the Greater Manchester Liberal Democrats this week!"

Mr Rowen has now had a bet with Mark Hunter on the outcome - the amount? A crisp twenty pound - the money going to their local hospitals!
